Paris has always been nostalgic for me, it holds a special place in my heart. Last month I got the chance to attend my first visit to the Salon de la lingerie in Paris and what a great way to start 2019.
If you are planning on attending the trade show for the first time
Here are a few tips
- Download the SIL & IFL app on your phone
- Go through the schedule to ensure you don’t miss out on any shows/workshops you are interested in
- Have your business cards handy if you plan on meeting people
- Bring a tote bag (you’ll want this for all the brochures accumulated to read later)
- Pack your own lunch, the food options are limited, expensive and crowded
I really didn’t know what all to do here or what to expect, for a first timer. I thought I’d just go and check out all the brands I knew that were attending the show. I wasn’t aware that I had to make appointments with brands to enter their booths till a few days before the show. Though it’s ok to rock up to the smaller designers without an appointment you will need an appointment if you would like to check out any of the larger brands (I felt most of these didn’t take bloggers seriously anyway).
One of the busiest booths was Aubade with their Viktor & Rolf capsule collection on show.
Trend & Selection
This area was where the upcoming trends and workshops were showcased.
Basically I just spent two days roaming the aisles getting lost and getting to meet the people behind the scenes. Being able to put faces to many people in the lingerie community, to talk and really get a feel for the designers and brands really left me leaving wanting to support them even more. Unfortunately I didn’t discover any new brands like I’d hoped but I was at least able to see first hand and feel all the pieces from designers I’ve only been able to admire from my finger tips.
Bijoux Indiscrets booth showing me their 12 Sexy Days and all the bubblegum goodies, how cute would this look in the boudoir?
The one thing I noticed was the SS19 ad campaigns by Simone Perele and Chantal Thomass. Do you see something different going on here too? It’s nice to see Simone Perele taking a new approach from their typical lingerie campaigns and it seems like a fresh new make over targeting a different crowd. The brand image is going in a new direction and I like it.
Your not so typical Chantal Thomass ad campaign. A more nonchalant vibe compared to the usual frivolous and fun touch from the designer herself which I am already missing. Where are the dancer girls with their red lipstick and bob cuts?
There was so much to take in from this section alone that made me wish I was a designer. For as long as I can remember I have loved the different textures and colours of fabric and lace, if only I had more time to go through every inch and delve deeper but I was on a touch and go schedule.
Kaleidescope Fashion Show
If you make it to SIL make sure you attend at least one of the fashion shows. Line up early cause they get pretty busy and you’ll want to make sure you have a good spot to be able to make out the details on the pieces. I really only had time to make it to one fashion show which was “Kaleidoscope” which had a fun kind of futuristic vibe to it with lots of fluro fluffy accessories.
Maybe I didn’t look hard enough but there didn’t seem to be much diversity in women being presented at the show overall. There were no asian women and the only curvy woman I saw was the one in the fashion show. Even when asked to check out the colour and skin tone work shop where the main focus was “How to decipher the right shade of colour for every skin tone” and yes there were a quite a few skin tones to select from there was one that seemed to be missing, mine. I just couldn’t relate.
This was my absolute favourite section of the show. A really great mix of some of the coolest brands at the show which better represented modern lingerie styles, and most importantly the lingerie I like.
In my conclusion, the show was fun to do once. Would I go back? Not anytime soon, at least until there is a lot more diversity being represented at the show. So now that the show is done and dusted, time for some lingerie shopping.
Keep an eye on my next post to find out where!
